Butoh Dance
6-hour suspension movement

Butoh dance is a Japanese performance art that arose out of the pain and suffering in the aftermath of WWII. Some characteristics include white body make-up, slow movement, and intense physical and psychological exploration.

Suspended 15 feet from the ceiling by rope and a piece of wood for a seat, each performer moved continuously for 6 hours while confined to the hanging seat. Each performer’s improvisatory actions and reactions were founded in their own psychological space. Yet, as interactions occurred between performers, a collective body of movement and emotion was created.
